St. James' Episcopal Church is located in the beautiful red building at the intersection of Highland and E. Columbia St. in Magnolia, Arkansas. The Episcopal Church is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Episcopalians hold dearly to the three interconnected principles of scripture, tradition and reason and believe that salvation comes from God's grace. The Episcopal Church emphasizes the growth of a mature faith and the development of a personal theology. Episcopal liturgy provides an anchor for prayer and reflection. St. James', like most Episcopal congregations, promotes an atmosphere
of spiritual growth through a historic combination of Catholic and Protestant traditions.
You are invited to participate in our weekly Sunday 11:00 a.m. service that is easy to follow in the printed service booklet. You will feel comfortable knowing what to say and when to sit, kneel, stand and come forward for Holy Communion if you choose to partake. After the service you are invited to gather for conversation and refreshments in the Parish Hall adjoining the church.
Did you know that "Episcopal" comes from the Greek word "episkopos" which means "bishop?" American bishops, who oversee dioceses, are elected (rather than appointed) by both clergy and the laity. After all, the Episcopal Church formed after the American Revolutionary War for independence from England when surviving American church members wanted autonomy to run their church affairs and yet maintain a close spiritual affiliation with the Church of England.
Episcopalians hold dearly to the three interconnected principles of scripture, tradition and reason and believe that salvation comes from God's grace; thus, our life of gratitude, directed to God through our neighbor, flows from our awareness and cooperation with God's wonderful grace (love.)
Here are some helpful thoughts: when you come to St. James' for the first time, your anxiety will be understood as most of us have come from other denominations. Any member will be pleased to mentor you, if desired; but we won't smother you because we respect your space! If you're coming from the Magnolia area, you'll likely recognize one of your neighbors as we come from all walks of life. You may wear what makes you comfortable but you'll probably feel best if you dress as you would if going for a doctor appointment or going to an appointment with the Lord!
